Auditions for London Musical Arts String Quartet in Association

 

LMA Ensemble performs around 18 full evening concerts and 8 Mini Maestro family concerts each year at St Martin-in-the-Fields. Our usual configuration is 12 string players, with additional wind as required, performing music mostly from the baroque and classical periods.

 

The aim of the LMA String Quartet in Association scheme is to provide a string quartet with regular income and professional development opportunities, both by playing within LMA Ensemble at our St Martin's series and performing as a quartet at concerts we will promote at other venues. The total amount of work we can offer currently is in the range of £3,750 - £5,750 for each member of the quartet over a twelve-month period, pro-rata, depending on the length of the appointment. 

 

We welcome applications from committed professional string quartets of regular constitution, based within a reasonable travelling distance of London. The quartet should also be enthusiastic about exploring new ways of communicating their music-making to the public. 

 

Opportunities

 

within LMA Ensemble:

 

performing as part of LMA Ensemble at its series at St Martin-in-the-Fields as soloists, principals, co-principals, and in selected string quartet pieces at some of these concerts

 

as a quartet:

 

concert engagements in other venues using new staging and performance practices, such as Music-in-Motion

 

audio-visual promotional materials from the above performances

 

educational and outreach work

 

display of the quartet's name and logo on LMA marketing materials

 

 

Application procedure:

 

1st stage - deadline Friday 1 July 2016

 

Email us with a covering letter expressing your interest, biographies or CVs of all the members of your quartet, your members' and quartet's website addresses and links to any audio or audio-visual material you may have.

 

2nd stage - by mutual arrangement as soon as possible.

 

Audition and interview of up to 2 hours involving:

                  Rehearsing and playing some quartet repertoire of your choice

                  Playing concerto excerpts accompanied by your colleagues

                  Responding to a conductor

                  Exploring some Music-in-Motion techniques

 

3rd stage - summer to autumn 2016

 

Trial with LMA Ensemble at one of our concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields.

 

4th stage - late autumn 2016 to winter 2017

 

Appointment, subject to agreement on fees, dates and time-period.
