Whether you are a professional musician, student, teacher or choir director, the LMA Conducting Courses and Masterclasses are great opportunities to develop your work on the podium.
Courses consist of 8 - 10 weekly classes during term-time, working with the class ensemble and sometimes a small professional ensemble, and include an informal concert. Masterclasses take place over an intensive week of sessions with the class ensemble and an orchestra, ending with a public concert.
Both aim to teach you the ability to direct the musical flow precisely as you feel it - with no compromises. There is particular emphasis on physical embodiment and characterisation of the music, how to connect with the musicians and deeply 'internalise' a score, based on the teachings of the great pedagogue of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, Ilya Musin.
With this 'hands-on' approach, which recognises that technique and musicality are inseparable, all the major aspects of the art and craft of conducting, from 'the beat', to rehearsal technique, to the psychology of conducting and playing in orchestras are addressed naturally and organically in each session.
The class ensemble is an important part of both offerings, and all participants are required* to play in it on a relevant orchestral instrument, or piano (to minimum Grade 8 standard). This gives participants a valuable perspective from the 'receiving end', deeper insights into the music, as well as providing more authentic feedback and opportunities for discussion. It's also much more satisfying to conduct orchestral instruments rather than just piano.
*If you cannot offer a relevant instrument to the required standard you may be asked to assist with some orchestra management.
The course leader, John Landor, MA Hons (Oxon), is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and Music Director of London Musical Arts Orchestra, a professional ensemble based at St Martin-in-the-Fields. He is also an international guest conductor of orchestras, choirs, and opera companies, in concert and the recording studio, with a career spanning more than 30 years. He studied with several of the world’s great conducting pedagogues, including George Hurst in Great Britain and especially with Ilya Musin in Russia. He is a sympathetic and imaginative teacher, responsive, respectful and committed to his pupils.
