This masterclass is for conductors who already have experience working with full orchestra in the standard repertoire, and are prepared to challenge themselves to gain more mastery. It is based on the principles of the late Ilya Musin, Professor of Orchestral Conducting of the St Petersburg Conservatoire.
It is led by a former student of Musin, John Landor, Music Director of London Musical Arts Orchestra and Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London. Maestro Landor has enjoyed a long international career conducting orchestras, choirs and opera companies, both in concert and in the recording studio, as well as regularly leading conducting courses and masterclasses. The foundations of his teaching are empathy, imagination, responsiveness, respect and commitment.
More details of Maestro Landor’s teaching principles and testimonials from students can be found here.
Each participant will be allocated one movement from either Brahms' 3rd or 4th Symphonies to work on and perform in the concert. They should also have a good knowledge of all the other movements of these works, so that the whole class can be involved through observation, discussion and practise.
The Salomon Orchestra is well-known as London’s finest non-professional orchestra and has worked with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle and Sir Andrew Davies in the early years of their professional careers. The forces available will be full wind, brass, timpani/percussion, with strings at 86442. The venue for the orchestral sessions and concert is St Mark’s Church, Primrose Hill, London NW1 7TN, a beautiful church with a fine acoustic near Regent’s Park. The other sessions will take place in a studio in Maida Hill, London W9 2HH.
